Rockstar finally showed the game running. It's 26 minutes captured on a base PlayStation 5 — not a dev machine — alternating between cinematics and pure gameplay with Jason and Lucia across Vice City and the state of Leonida. The presentation premiered on Netflix and arrives free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official site at 9 PM ET. It's the biggest look at the game in nearly three years of waiting.
Holding a trigger, the player picks from a few prompts to interact with anyone nearby, exactly like Red Dead Redemption 2. The demo opens with Jason and Lucia picking up a package in a run-down building, and the first thing the internet noticed was a dog being petted. Car theft changed too: you can use a slim jim to pop the door without smashing the window.
Absent since GTA IV, the sixth wanted level reappears in the HUD. Rockstar didn't show what happens when the meter fills completely — but it did show far more chaotic police chases, and Port Gellhorn has its own police force, a sign that Leonida will have multiple jurisdictions.
When the two are together, character switching is instantaneous: you can drive as one and hop to the other in the passenger seat with no transition. Apart, the switch takes a few seconds, like in GTA V. Jason also has a slow-motion ability that highlights lethal shot zones (red) and incapacitation zones (yellow) — the first hint of a morality system.
The streets look visibly busier than GTA V's, and one scene shows Jason weaving through a packed nightclub with an NPC density new to the series. Among the activities glimpsed: street races, jet skis, scuba diving, basketball, dirt biking and even weightlifting. Clothing and accessories can be customized on the fly, through a wheel similar to the weapon selector.
Putting the premiere behind a subscription annoyed part of the fanbase, and Netflix error reports spiked minutes before showtime. Meanwhile, the supposed leak of the game's source code circulating this week turned out to be a 113 GB file full of zeros and a virus. At VICEVERSA we keep reporting the leaks without showing them.
