Stephen Root Confirms He Plays Brian Heder in GTA 6: "You're Gonna See Me in There"

American actor Stephen Root has confirmed that he plays Brian Heder in Grand Theft Auto VI, making him the first member of the cast to publicly go on record about a role in the game. Root spoke to the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in mid-September 2026.
Asked about GTA 6, he did not dodge the question: "You're gonna see me in there." He also admitted that keeping the secret had become almost impossible, because fans had already recognized him: "There were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice."
Check out what we know about the actor and his character:
-
Who is Brian Heder
According to Rockstar's official profile, Brian is an old-school drug runner in the Leonida Keys who lets Jason live in one of his properties in exchange for help with his business. In other words, he is one of the first people players will meet, since the story begins in the Keys.
-
Who is Stephen Root
A veteran character actor known as Milton in Office Space, Monroe Fuches in Barry, and the voices of Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland in the animated series King of the Hill.
-
How fans found out
Players began linking the voice to Root as soon as Brian was introduced in the second trailer, in May 2025. The Extended Look shown in August 2026 gave him more screen time and turned the guess into near-certainty.
-
What is still a secret
Rockstar has not officially announced the cast, and the actors behind Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos remain unconfirmed.
Root's comments suggest the studio is relaxing its famously tight secrecy as launch approaches. More cast reveals, official or not, are likely in the coming weeks. Meet the rest of the characters in our guide: Jason, Lucia and the GTA 6 cast.
GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Context
Rockstar has never published a cast list for GTA VI, so Stephen Root's remarks to the Associated Press are the first time an actor has publicly placed himself in the game. Speaking at the BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills, in the same stretch in which he won an Emmy for Apple TV's Widow's Bay, Root said: "Yeah, you're gonna see me in there." He added that his character had been part of the game's first rollout almost a year earlier.
Fans had tied Brian Heder's voice to Root since the character appeared in the second trailer on May 6, 2025. Root did not say the name himself. The Brian Heder link comes from that fan identification, which Variety and other outlets now treat as settled.
What we know
- Root told the AP he appears in GTA VI and that online sleuths had recognized his voice, which many people know from King of the Hill.
- Rockstar's character guide describes Brian Heder as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys, still moving product through his boatyard with his third wife, Lori.
- Brian appears in the Extended Look meeting Jason and Lucia at a rooftop party and sharing a cigar with Jason.
- Root was born and raised in Florida and studied at the University of Florida, according to Variety.
- Rockstar has not officially named any cast member and did not comment on Root's remarks.
What we don't know yet
- Root did not say which character he plays, and Rockstar has not confirmed that he voices Brian Heder.
- The actors behind Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos have not been revealed.
- The size of Brian's role in the story is unknown beyond his link to Jason in the Keys.
- Rockstar has not said whether it will share cast details before the November 19 launch.
VICEVERSA's take
The Brian Heder identification is about as close to certain as it gets without Rockstar's word. Root confirmed he is in the game, placed his character in the first wave of promotion and pointed to the King of the Hill voice that gave him away, and no other character from those trailers has been tied to him. Still, the specific claim rests on inference. Headlines saying he confirmed the name go one step further than he did.
The more telling part is that he spoke at all. Rockstar has kept GTA VI's cast off the record through two trailers and the Extended Look, and an Emmy winner talking openly to a wire service suggests that wall is getting harder to hold this close to launch. The casting also fits the role Rockstar describes: Root's best-known work, from Barry to King of the Hill, leans on comic, slightly shady characters, and he has real Florida roots. Watch for more actors to talk as launch nears, though the leads are the reveals that matter.
