GTA 6 characters: who Jason and Lucia are, how their relationship works and the full supporting cast
Everything Rockstar has revealed about GTA VI's two protagonists, the choice between lovers and partners in crime, character switching and the six supporting characters revealed so far.
For the first time in the series' 3D era, Grand Theft Auto has a couple at its center. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are both playable, and their relationship is not just a plot device: it has its own systems, its own screen and consequences for how you play. This guide gathers everything Rockstar has officially revealed about the two protagonists and the supporting characters around them.
Lucia Caminos
Lucia is the first female protagonist of a mainline GTA since the series went 3D in 2001, and she is the first face players saw: the December 2023 trailer opens with her in a prison jumpsuit at the Leonida Penitentiary, answering an officer's questions.
According to Rockstar's official profile, Lucia's father taught her to fight almost as soon as she could walk, and fighting for her family is what landed her in prison. She got out through sheer luck and, in Rockstar's words, has decided that from now on she only makes smart moves. Her background ties her to Leonida's Latin communities, which is one reason fans connect her with the Puerto Rico-inspired island that surfaced in old leaked development material — a link Rockstar has not confirmed.
Jason Duval
Jason, by Rockstar's description, is a man who wants an easy life and keeps finding the opposite. He grew up surrounded by grifters and crooks, joined the Army to leave his troubled teenage years behind, and ended up in the Leonida Keys doing what he knows best: working for local drug runners. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that the story begins in the Keys, where Jason has his first home, and that at the very beginning of the game you control only Jason.
Lovers or partners in crime: how the relationship works
In its September 2026 interview with Famitsu, Rockstar explained that the relationship between Jason and Lucia is shaped by the player. The key points:
- You can treat them as a romantic couple or keep them as partners in crime only.
- Choosing not to pursue the romance closes off some interactions, such as holding hands or kissing, but the main story can be completed either way.
- A relationship screen tracks how the couple is doing, alongside information such as your bank balance.
- The two can message each other and send photos from their phones.
Rockstar said the team originally considered four playable characters but settled on two, reasoning — from its experience with Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 — that fewer protagonists mean more screen time for each one and a stronger emotional bond with the player.
Switching between Jason and Lucia
The Extended Look showed how switching works. When Jason and Lucia are together, the switch is instant: you can be driving as Jason and jump straight to Lucia in the passenger seat. When they are apart, switching takes a few seconds, similar to GTA V. Outside missions you can switch freely, but Rockstar restricts it at specific story moments. Robberies can be done alone or as a pair, so who you bring along becomes a tactical choice.
The supporting cast revealed so far
Rockstar introduced six supporting characters on its official site alongside the second trailer in May 2025. Their roles, as Rockstar describes them:
| Character | Who they are |
|---|---|
| Cal Hampton | Jason's friend and fellow associate of Brian. A homebody and conspiracy theorist who is convinced the internet might be telling the truth about everything. |
| Boobie Ike | A Vice City street legend turned businessman, with real estate, a strip club and a stake in the recording studio Only Raw Records. |
| Dre'Quan Priest | Boobie's partner at Only Raw Records, more hustler than gangster, trying to make it big in the music business. |
| Real Dimez | Bae-Luxe and Roxy, best friends since high school whose music went viral and who are now working with Only Raw. |
| Raul Bautista | A charming, experienced bank robber always recruiting talent willing to take big risks. |
| Brian Heder | An old-school drug runner in the Keys who lets Jason live in one of his properties in exchange for help with his business. Voiced by Stephen Root. |
In September 2026, actor Stephen Root — known for Office Space, Barry and as the voice of Bill in King of the Hill — confirmed he plays Brian Heder, saying fans had recognized his voice as soon as the Extended Look aired. He is the first cast member to publicly confirm a role. Rockstar has not officially named the actors behind Jason and Lucia.
What we still don't know
- How the story ends, and whether choices lead to different endings.
- How big a role each supporting character plays, and whether more will be revealed before launch.
- Whether characters from earlier games make appearances — nothing has been confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Can you play only as Lucia?
No. Both are protagonists, the game starts with Jason, and some story moments lock you into one of them. In the open world you can choose who to control most of the time.
Does skipping the romance change the story?
Rockstar says the story can be completed either way; the choice changes available interactions between the two.
Is GTA VI inspired by Bonnie and Clyde?
Rockstar has described the couple in those terms since the first trailer, which ends on the two robbing a store together.
