GTA 6 wanted system explained: witnesses, Heat, the criminal profile and how to lose the police

How police work in GTA VI according to Rockstar: crimes need witnesses, the minimap no longer shows cops, your clothes and car can be identified, and a criminal profile shapes how Leonida reacts to you.

For twenty years, losing the police in Grand Theft Auto worked the same way: get out of the flashing circle on the minimap, wait for the stars to blink, done. GTA VI changes almost every part of that loop. Between the Extended Look in August 2026 and Rockstar's interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu in September, the studio has explained a system built around witnesses, descriptions and reputation. This guide puts all of it in one place and ends with practical advice based on how the system is described.

Everything here comes from what Rockstar has shown or said before launch. Details can still change, and we will update this guide once the game is out.

Crimes now need witnesses

In earlier games the police often knew about a crime the instant it happened. In GTA VI, Rockstar says, a wanted level depends on someone seeing the crime and reporting it — the same principle used in Red Dead Redemption 2. A crime nobody witnesses may never reach the police. A crowded Vice City street, on the other hand, is full of potential witnesses, and security cameras in stores can identify you too.

Rob Nelson also explained that the number of stars is not automatic: Rockstar sets how serious each type of action is, so a minor offense and a shootout don't escalate the same way. The top of the scale is back to six stars, a level the series hadn't used since GTA IV.

"Heat": the police look for you, not at you

The most visible change is on the minimap. Police officers no longer appear as dots with vision cones. Instead, the Extended Look showed a flashing red-and-blue zone that marks the general area where the police are searching. Inside it, they know roughly where you are, but not exactly — Rockstar calls this state Heat.

That means you can't simply watch the radar and slip between patrol cars. To know where officers are, you have to actually look — the Extended Look showed a focus mechanic for spotting them — and use cover, alleys and traffic.

The police remember what you look like

GTA VI's police build a description of the suspect. Based on the footage and on Rockstar's explanations, what they can know includes:

  • Your clothes — so changing outfits helps shake them off.
  • Your face — whether a witness or a camera has seen it, or whether a mask kept your identity hidden.
  • Your vehicle — whether the getaway car has been identified.
  • Your partner — whether they know Jason or Lucia had an accomplice.

Rockstar confirmed you can reduce Heat by changing clothes, getting rid of weapons or leaving the search area. Wearing a mask during a robbery and taking it off afterwards is one of the ways to disappear, according to the Famitsu interview.

Long guns are no longer invisible

A small detail with big consequences: rifles and other long guns are now visible on your character. Walking around openly armed makes pedestrians avoid you, can draw attention and counts against you. To carry heavy weapons discreetly you store them in lockers at Ammu-Nation, in the trunk of your own car or in the trunk of a stolen vehicle. Handguns can still be concealed.

The criminal profile

Beyond the immediate wanted level, GTA VI keeps a hidden criminal profile of how you play. Rockstar says it distinguishes a "professional" criminal from a violent, dangerous one:

  • Using suppressive fire instead of lethal force, disabling police cars by shooting their tires and avoiding civilian casualties push your profile toward professional.
  • Constant violence, open carry and repeated offenses push it the other way — and, according to Rockstar, if you commit many crimes in a row you can be locked into a more chaotic state where you're no longer treated as an ordinary citizen.
  • The world responds to the profile: aggressive players meet more aggressive police and NPCs.

Rockstar was careful to say the system isn't meant to punish players for playing "badly", but to make Leonida react believably. It also connects with Jason's slow-motion aiming ability shown in the Extended Look, which highlights lethal points in red and non-lethal points in yellow.

Places where you can't cause chaos

As in Red Dead Redemption 2, some locations important to the story are protected: Rockstar said you can't commit crimes near them, so players can't accidentally break a place the story still needs.

Different police in different places

The Extended Look showed that Port Gellhorn has its own police force. Leonida, like Florida, seems to be split into jurisdictions, which could mean different uniforms, vehicles and behavior depending on where you commit a crime. Rockstar hasn't detailed how this works yet.

How to lose the police in GTA 6 (our reading)

Based on how Rockstar describes the system, these habits should help once the game is out:

  1. Pick your moment. Fewer witnesses mean less Heat. A robbery in an empty back street is safer than one in front of a crowd.
  2. Deal with cameras. Rockstar says store robberies include security cameras and alarms that can be disabled first.
  3. Wear a mask, then lose it. Hide your face during the job and take the mask off after leaving the scene.
  4. Change your look. A different outfit breaks the description the police have.
  5. Switch cars. If the getaway vehicle is identified, it's a beacon. Swap it.
  6. Stash the rifle. Carrying a long gun in the open undoes everything else.
  7. Get out of the zone. Leave the red-and-blue search area and stay out of sight until the Heat fades.
  8. Bank your cash. If you're caught or killed, you lose the money you're carrying — money in the bank is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a six-star wanted level in GTA 6?

Yes. The Extended Look showed six stars on the interface. Rockstar hasn't shown what happens at the maximum level.

Do cops show on the minimap in GTA 6?

No. The minimap shows the search zone, not individual officers.

Can you rob stores without getting a wanted level?

According to Rockstar, yes, if you enter quietly — using a lock-picking tool on a back door and disabling cameras and alarms — and no one sees you.
