GTA 6: everything confirmed so far — release date, platforms, story and gameplay
The complete, sourced summary of Grand Theft Auto VI: when it launches, where you can play it, what it costs, who Jason and Lucia are, what Leonida looks like and how the game has changed.
Grand Theft Auto VI has been the most anticipated game of the decade since Rockstar Games first confirmed it in February 2022. Four years, two trailers, two delays and one 26-minute gameplay presentation later, a lot is finally official. This guide separates what Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two have actually confirmed from what is still speculation, and we update it every time something new is announced.
Short version: GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99. You play as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple, across the state of Leonida, Rockstar's take on present-day Florida, with Vice City at its heart. There is no PC version announced yet.
Release date: November 19, 2026
The date has moved twice. When the first trailer came out in December 2023, Rockstar promised a 2025 release. On May 2, 2025 the studio moved it to May 26, 2026, and on November 6, 2025 it moved it again, to November 19, 2026, saying it needed the extra months to reach the level of polish players expect. Since then Take-Two has repeated in every earnings call and at its September 2026 shareholder meeting that the date holds.
Digital pre-loading starts one week before launch, on November 12, according to the pre-order details Rockstar published in June 2026. That matters more than usual this time, because the boxed version of the game does not contain a disc (see the next section).
Platforms, performance and the PC question
GTA VI launches only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said in an interview in 2026 that the game currently runs at 30 frames per second on consoles, and that whether a 60 fps option will arrive at launch or later had not been decided. Rockstar has not detailed any specific enhancements for the PS5 Pro.
There is no PC version announced. Rockstar has historically released its games on consoles first — GTA V reached PC about a year and a half after its console debut, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year later. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said PC is increasingly important to the company but that Rockstar puts consoles first. Until there is an official announcement, any PC date you see online is a guess.
Price, editions and the "no disc" controversy
Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. There are two editions of the game itself:
- Standard Edition — $79.99: the full game.
- Ultimate Edition — $99.99: the game plus a bundle of extra in-game vehicles, weapons, clothing and cosmetic items.
Every pre-order also includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, a bonus inspired by the 2002 game. Rockstar confirmed that physical copies sold in stores contain a download code inside the box rather than a disc, a decision widely reported as an anti-leak measure. On September 24, 2026 Rockstar also revealed a $399.99 collector's box, The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, which does not include the game. Our editions and prices guide covers all of this in detail, including regional prices and which edition makes sense for you.
Story and characters
GTA VI is built around a couple: Lucia Caminos, the first female lead of a 3D-era Grand Theft Auto, and Jason Duval. Rockstar describes their story as a Bonnie-and-Clyde tale: after a job goes wrong, the two are pulled into a conspiracy that stretches across Leonida. The first trailer opens with Lucia in the Leonida Penitentiary; Jason grew up around grifters, served in the Army and ended up in the Keys working for local drug runners.
How the couple gets along is partly up to you. In its September 2026 interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Rockstar explained that you can treat the relationship as romantic or keep it strictly professional, and that some interactions depend on that choice. Rockstar has also revealed six supporting characters, including Brian Heder, voiced by actor Stephen Root. The full breakdown is in our characters guide.
Leonida and Vice City
The game takes place in Leonida, a fictional state that mirrors Florida. Rockstar has officially presented six areas: Vice City (Miami), the Leonida Keys (the Florida Keys), Grassrivers (the Everglades), Port Gellhorn (the Gulf coast), Ambrosia (the inland farm and industrial belt around Lake Okeechobee) and Mount Kalaga National Park in the north. It is the first time the series has returned to Vice City in a main entry since 2002's Vice City, and 2006's Vice City Stories on handhelds.
Rockstar has not published the size of the map. Footage from the trailers and the Extended Look shows much denser streets and crowds than GTA V's Los Santos. You can explore our own illustrated version on the interactive map of Leonida, and read about each region in the Leonida map guide.
What the Extended Look showed
On August 27, 2026 Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, roughly 26 minutes of footage that premiered on Netflix and reached YouTube six hours later. It was captured on a standard PlayStation 5 and alternated cutscenes with long stretches of gameplay. The main takeaways:
- Red Dead Redemption 2-style interactions: holding a trigger lets you talk to nearby characters by choosing from prompts.
- Instant character switching when Jason and Lucia are together — you can drive with one and swap to the other in the passenger seat.
- A six-star wanted level, absent since GTA IV, and police that no longer appear as dots on the minimap.
- Modern free-aim combat and a slow-motion ability that highlights lethal and non-lethal target points.
- Side activities such as street racing, jet skis, scuba diving, basketball and weight training.
- Crowds far denser than in any previous Rockstar game, especially in nightclubs and on the beachfront.
How the gameplay has changed
The Famitsu interview with Rob Nelson filled in many systems the footage only hinted at. The police now need witnesses to know about a crime, search for you inside an area instead of knowing exactly where you are, and can identify your clothes, face and car. A hidden criminal profile tracks whether you behave like a professional or like a violent menace, and Leonida reacts accordingly. Long guns such as rifles are visible on your character and have to be stored in lockers or car trunks. Money is split between the cash in your pocket, which you lose if you are killed or arrested, and a bank account.
Daily life matters more too: gyms change your character's build and stamina, food gives temporary boosts, and hideouts change as the story moves through its chapters. We explain these systems in two dedicated guides: the wanted system and money, cars, gyms and hideouts.
Music: GTA VI — The Album
On September 17, 2026 Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a record of 34 original songs releasing on November 19 alongside the game. Announced names include Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen, Keith Richards, Future, Metro Boomin, Rauw Alejandro, PinkPantheress and Fred again.. As in previous games, the in-game radio stations will also carry licensed music, but Rockstar has not published the full station lineup.
Leaks: what we report and what we don't
GTA VI has been leaked more than any other game. In September 2022 about 50 minutes of early development footage was stolen and posted online, and in August 2026, days before the Extended Look, more gameplay clips circulated and a supposed copy of the game turned out to be a file full of zeros carrying malware. Following our editorial policy, we report that a leak happened when it is newsworthy, label it clearly, and never publish or link to the leaked material itself. Be careful with "download GTA 6" offers: before November 19, every one of them is a scam.

Frequently asked questions
Is GTA 6 coming to PS4 or Xbox One?
No. It is a current-generation exclusive: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
Will GTA 6 have online multiplayer?
Not at launch, as far as we know. The FAQ PlayStation published when pre-orders opened describes GTA VI as "a single-player experience". Rockstar hasn't announced a new GTA Online, and given how important GTA Online has been, many expect one to follow separately — but that is speculation for now.
Can I play GTA 6 on PC at launch?
No. There is no announced PC version or date.
Does the physical copy work without internet?
The box contains a download code, so you need a connection to download the game at least once.
