GTA 6 Enters the Final Stretch Ahead of Its Expected November Launch

Less than a month remains until the scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games has set November 19, 2026, as the launch date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, bringing one of the gaming industry's most anticipated titles closer to release.
Since GTA V arrived in 2013, the franchise has gone more than a decade without a new mainline entry. During that time, the previous game has remained popular, supported by its online mode and multiple releases across different platforms.
Much of the excitement surrounding GTA VI centers on the return to Vice City, the introduction of two protagonists, and the promise of a more detailed open world. However, some claims circulating about the map's size and gameplay systems should be treated cautiously until they are confirmed by Rockstar or supported by independent testing.
Leonida Sets the Stage for the New Adventure
In GTA VI, Rockstar takes players to Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida. The region includes Vice City and several other environments featured in the game's promotional material, expanding the range of locations compared with Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA V.
The new setting appears to extend beyond a single major city surrounded by rural areas. Footage released so far showcases urban districts, highways, coastal locations, and natural landscapes, including wetlands and islands reminiscent of southern Florida.
Despite frequent comparisons between the two games' maps, there is no sufficiently established official measurement confirming that Leonida will have more than twice the land area of GTA V. Figures shared by fan communities and unofficial websites should therefore be considered estimates rather than definitive data.
The same caution applies to claims that the new version of Vice City will be twice the size of Los Santos. Map comparisons depend not only on geographic area but also on urban density, accessible interiors, and the amount of playable content.
Jason and Lucia Take Center Stage
One of the biggest changes in GTA VI is its approach to the main characters. Rather than following three protagonists, as in GTA V, the new story focuses on Jason and Lucia, a duo shown in situations involving crime, pursuits, and conflict.
Lucia also represents a milestone for the franchise. She is the first female protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game to take on this kind of central playable role. The relationship between the two characters is expected to be a major part of the narrative, although the full extent of their gameplay interactions remains to be seen.
The ability to switch between characters and take part in coordinated heists has attracted considerable interest. However, specific claims about real-time cooperative actions or major changes to combat mechanics should be verified through official materials or hands-on coverage.
Open World, Artificial Intelligence, and Physics
The trailers for GTA VI showcase busy environments, a range of vehicles, and everyday activities across Vice City and other parts of Leonida. The game's visual presentation also places considerable emphasis on lighting, character detail, and environmental design.
These elements have raised expectations for improvements to pedestrian behavior and the way the world responds to player actions. However, there is not yet enough publicly established evidence to claim that every NPC will have a complex individual routine or that in-game social media will automatically record city events in real time.
The same applies to physics. Vehicle handling across different surfaces, interactions with water, and environmental responses to player actions are important aspects of an open-world game. Their overall quality, however, can only be properly assessed through practical testing.
Rockstar's RAGE engine is expected to play a central role in the game's visual presentation and technical systems. Still, claiming that it surpasses GTA V in every technical aspect before a full evaluation would be premature.
What to Expect Before Launch
As the scheduled November release approaches, players are looking for more information about the campaign, open-world mechanics, and performance on consoles.
Details such as the final installation size, pre-load availability, technical requirements, and specific gameplay features should be checked through official Rockstar announcements and the relevant platform channels.
More than a decade after GTA V first launched, Grand Theft Auto VI arrives with enormous expectations. That level of anticipation makes it particularly important to distinguish features actually demonstrated by the developer from estimates and speculation circulating before release.
The definitive answers about the map's size, the depth of its simulations, and the changes to its gameplay will come when players can finally explore Leonida for themselves.
Context
Most of the numbers that circulate about GTA 6 have a traceable origin, and it is rarely Rockstar itself. The map comparisons, for example, come from YouTuber TGG, who said he saw about three hours of the game at Rockstar North in August 2026 and asked the studio about scale. PC Gamer and VICE reported his account: Leonida about twice the size of GTA V's map and three times Red Dead Redemption 2's, and Vice City alone about twice the size of Los Santos.
That is a secondhand account, not an official measurement. PC Gamer headlined it with "apparently" and noted that the two comparisons are hard to reconcile, which is why this article treats the figures as estimates. The same logic applies to character switching: what exists comes from interviews, not from a full rules list.
What we know
- The release is set for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preloading opens on November 12, and the boxed edition contains a download code instead of a disc (GamingBible).
- Rockstar presents Leonida as a state inspired by Florida, with Vice City and other regions shown on its official GTA VI site and in the trailers.
- Switching between Jason and Lucia exists, but with limits. In a Famitsu interview reported by TweakTown, Rob Nelson explained that some missions require a specific character, some require switching at set moments, and others allow swapping at will.
- In the open world, the Dazed preview reported by PC Gamer says you can play as a couple or go off on your own, for example switching from Jason at the wheel to Lucia in the passenger seat.
- Rockstar has not published the download size or regional unlock times, according to GamingBible.
What we don't know yet
- The real size of the map in square kilometres. No official figure exists, and the TGG comparisons have not been repeated by Rockstar in its own channels.
- How deep the NPC and physics systems are in practice. The trailers show dense streets and detailed environments, but no outlet has tested the systems freely yet.
- How much freedom switching really gives during heists, and whether the free swapping seen in previews works in every mission.
VICEVERSA's take
With four weeks to go, the useful question is not "what will GTA 6 have?" but "who said so?". Rockstar's site, its trailers and on-the-record interviews (Famitsu, Dazed) are one tier. Accounts from preview attendees such as TGG are a second tier: plausible, but secondhand. Fan maps and viral lists are a third tier, and they deserve the most caution.
That is also how VICEVERSA will report the launch: each claim with its source, and with a clear line between what Rockstar showed and what someone estimated. From November 19, the measurements stop being guesses.
