GTA VI: Leonida-Inspired Coffee and Dan Houser’s Revelations Revisit Vice City’s Legacy

The Grand Theft Auto VI marketing campaign and reflections from one of the franchise’s key creative figures have brought the world of GTA into the spotlight for different reasons. While a reported collaboration in Miami puts a new product inspired by the upcoming game in focus, Dan Houser has revisited the development of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), offering a candid assessment of his own writing and highlighting actor Ray Liotta’s contribution to the finished game.
Leonida Coffee Brings the GTA Universe to Miami
Miami, the real-world city that inspired Vice City, has once again become a point of interest amid anticipation for GTA VI, which is scheduled for release in November 2026.
According to reports, local coffee shop Vice City Bean has partnered with Rockstar Games to introduce Leonida, a coffee blend inspired by the fictional state where the upcoming game takes place.
The product is reportedly priced at $23 for a package weighing approximately 10 ounces (280 grams). Its description lists a medium roast with tasting notes of cocoa, apricot, and Brazil nuts.
The reported collaboration reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry, where publishers use products and real-world experiences to extend their franchises beyond the screen. In the case of GTA VI, the Leonida name also reinforces the connection between the game's fictional setting and the Florida landscape that helped inspire its world.
However, details about the partnership, pricing, and product availability should be verified through official sources before being treated as confirmed information.
Dan Houser Says Ray Liotta Elevated Vice City’s Script
As attention shifts toward the next chapter in the franchise, Dan Houser has brought a story from the development of GTA: Vice City back into the conversation. In an interview with IGN, the Rockstar Games co-founder discussed Ray Liotta’s performance as Tommy Vercetti, the protagonist of the 2002 release.
Reflecting on the actor’s work, Houser offered a self-critical assessment of the script he had written for the character. According to the writer, the material itself was not particularly strong, but Liotta’s performance made the dialogue work.
Houser also emphasized how skilled actors can bring depth and nuance to a character beyond what is written on the page. In his view, Liotta gave Tommy Vercetti a level of authenticity that would have been difficult to achieve with another performer.
Best known for his role in Goodfellas (1990), Liotta died in May 2022. His performance in Vice City became a defining part of the game’s identity, helping establish Tommy as a protagonist with a distinctive voice and personality.
Vice City’s Legacy Lives On
More than two decades after its release, GTA: Vice City remains an important part of the franchise’s history. Its Miami-inspired setting helped establish the game’s distinctive atmosphere, while Liotta’s performance contributed to making Tommy Vercetti one of the series’ most recognizable characters.
With GTA VI scheduled for release in November 2026, Rockstar is returning to the Florida-inspired setting through Leonida and a new version of Vice City.
The reported promotional activity in Miami and Houser’s recollections offer two different perspectives on the franchise’s enduring appeal: anticipation for its next installment and the creative decisions that helped shape its past.
Context
Dan Houser co-founded Rockstar and was the lead writer on its biggest games until he left the company in 2020. His comments came in an interview with IGN, reported by GamesRadar+ on October 17. He was blunt: "My writing's awful, and he made it sound good."
The coffee is a different kind of story. Vice City Bean sells Leonida on its own website as a blend that celebrates Miami and "the release of Rockstar Games' GTA VI". Fan accounts and some outlets call it an official collaboration, but the only source for that is the shop itself.
What we know
- Houser said Liotta "brought a level of authenticity to Tommy that I think we'd have struggled with anyone else to find", and that Rockstar offered his agent "a chunk of money" for about four days of work (GamesRadar+).
- Ray Liotta died in May 2022.
- Leonida costs $23 for a 10 oz bag (about 283 g). It is a medium roast of Colombian and Ethiopian beans, with notes of cacao, apricot and Brazil nut, sold as whole beans or ground.
- It is a limited release, and online sales only ship within the United States for now.
What we don't know yet
- Whether Rockstar licensed the coffee. There is no statement from Rockstar, and the product page is the only source for the partnership.
- When international shipping will start, and how long the blend will be on sale.
- Whether Houser has seen GTA VI. He left Rockstar years before its release and has not commented on it in this interview.
VICEVERSA's take
The two halves of this story have little to do with each other, but both point at the same thing: how much of GTA's identity comes from people and places outside the code. Liotta gave Tommy a voice that Houser himself says the script did not have, and Miami businesses are now selling their own piece of Vice City.
GTA VI will be the first mainline GTA released since Houser left. Its leads, Jason and Lucia, will be judged in part on the same thing that made Tommy work: whether the performances lift the writing. As for the coffee, treat it as a fan-facing product from a Miami shop until Rockstar says otherwise.
