Is the GTA 6 Map Bigger Than Leonida? Fans Point to a Puerto Rico-Style Island in Decade-Old Files

Rumor. Not officially confirmed yet. It may change before launch.

Ever since the 192GB archive of old Rockstar material surfaced online on September 18, 2026, fans have been combing through early GTA 6 map files dated to around 2014–2015. Among the theories spreading in the community, one stands out: renders of an island that some players believe was inspired by Puerto Rico, which could point to a playable area outside the state of Leonida.

The idea is not new for the series. In GTA 5, the snowy town of North Yankton appeared only in specific story missions, far from Los Santos. Fans suggest a Caribbean island could play a similar role in GTA 6, especially because of Lucia's Latin roots.

Here is what we know, and what we don't:

  • What is confirmed

Rockstar has only officially presented the state of Leonida, with six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.

  • What the leak shows

Outlets that analysed the archive describe an early Leonida prototype, with labels such as "Alligator Farm", "Coast Guard" and "Disused Theme Park", plus early Vice City assets.

  • What remains unverified

None of the outlets we checked mention a Puerto Rico-style island. The theory comes from fans, and the renders circulating online have not been authenticated.

  • Why caution matters

The files are about a decade old. Even the coverage of the leak stresses that a prototype of that age cannot confirm the final map's roads, borders or playable locations.

That is why this story carries our Rumor badge. An extra island, accessed only during a mission, would be a fun surprise and fits Rockstar's history, but there is no official sign of it. Rockstar has not commented on the leak.

GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until then, everything confirmed about the state is in our guide: the GTA 6 map and Leonida's regions.

Context

The 192GB archive that began circulating on September 18 is not a new hack. TweakTown reported that the files are believed to come from Rockstar's 2022 breach, the same incident that put roughly 90 early GTA VI development videos online. Most of the material concerns GTA V; the GTA VI content is limited to low-quality early map renders.

It is also the second leak in two months. In August, gameplay footage spread online ahead of the Netflix Extended Look, and on August 26 Rockstar said the leak had been heartbreaking for its team and that the game was nearly finished. The November 19 release date has not moved.

What we know

  • The archive surfaced on September 18, 2026, and reports link it to Rockstar's 2022 security breach rather than a new intrusion.
  • Most of the files relate to GTA V, including a cut Liberty City expansion and the abandoned Agent Trevor DLC.
  • The GTA VI material consists of rough, early map renders that some users say resemble locations from the official trailers.
  • Rockstar's official setting is the state of Leonida, with six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
  • Rockstar publicly addressed the August gameplay leak; none of the outlets we checked reported a statement on the 192GB archive.

What we don't know yet

  • No reputable outlet we checked has reported a Puerto Rico-style island in the files; the theory comes from fan posts, and the renders shared online are not authenticated.
  • The age of the GTA VI map files is uncertain: one report dates the prototype to around 2014 or 2015, while Notebookcheck said the models may have been built before 2020.
  • Reports disagree on whether the archive comes from the 2022 breach or overlaps with the 2023 GTA V source code leak.
  • Rockstar has not said whether any playable area exists outside Leonida.

VICEVERSA's take

We don't consider the island theory a credible guide to the final game. The evidence is a handful of fan-circulated renders that no outlet has authenticated, taken from files that are years old and were made long before the game reached its current form. Early prototypes routinely contain areas that never ship. The same archive's Liberty City expansion for GTA V, planned and then dropped, is a reminder of how much Rockstar sketches and later abandons.

There is a stronger argument against the idea: Rockstar has been specific about Leonida. It has named six regions, given each a distinct identity and built its marketing around a fictional Florida. A story-only detour in the style of North Yankton in GTA V is not impossible, but nothing official points to one. Until Rockstar says otherwise, the sensible approach is to treat any map image from this archive as a look at the game's history, not a preview of what ships on November 19.
