GTA 6 Launches in One Month: Everything You Need to Know Before November 19

The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI is almost over. With one month remaining until its scheduled release, Rockstar Games is entering the final stretch of its marketing campaign for one of the most anticipated video games in recent years.
Set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, the game returns players to a modern version of Vice City. This time, the story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two protagonists whose involvement in a criminal conspiracy puts them at the center of a much larger conflict.
The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Before release day arrives, here's how GTA 6 reached this point and what has been confirmed so far.
From Early Leaks to the First Official Trailer
Rockstar confirmed in February 2022 that development on the next Grand Theft Auto game was underway. Later that year, in September, a major leak exposed early development footage, offering the first substantial look at the project and revealing scenes featuring the game's protagonists.
The first official trailer arrived on December 4, 2023, a day earlier than planned, after the video leaked online. It introduced the modern-day Vice City setting, offered a glimpse of Leonida's wider environment, and established an initial release window of 2025.
The trailer quickly became a major online event, drawing enormous attention from gaming communities and introducing a broader audience to Jason and Lucia. It also established the visual style and atmosphere that would define Rockstar's next open-world release.
Two Delays Changed the Release Schedule
In May 2025, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would no longer launch in 2025. The company moved the release date to May 26, 2026, explaining that additional development time was needed to deliver the level of quality players expected.
Four days later, Rockstar released the second trailer, which expanded on the game's story, introduced additional characters, and showed more of the world surrounding Jason and Lucia.
A second delay followed in November 2025, moving the launch to November 19, 2026. Rockstar said the extra time would allow the development team to finish the game to the standard the studio was aiming for.
With the latest date approaching, the focus has shifted from the development timeline to the final promotional campaign and the features players will experience at launch.
What the Latest Trailers Have Revealed
Rockstar released an expanded presentation in August 2026, providing another look at the game's world and complementing information shared in previous trailers.
On October 15, the studio released the official launch trailer. The footage revisits Jason and Lucia and offers additional glimpses of the criminal world, locations, and characters that shape the story.
The trailer also features “Flower in a Hurricane,” an original musical collaboration involving Justice, Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
While the promotional material has provided plenty of details about the setting and narrative, there is still a distinction between cinematic footage and actual gameplay. Players will need to experience the finished game to assess its mechanics, mission structure, and open-world systems in full.
Preorders, Pricing, and Platforms
Preorders opened on June 25, 2026. Rockstar's digital store lists the Standard Edition at $79.99, alongside an Ultimate Edition that includes additional content.
The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced an official release date for the PC version, despite ongoing speculation about a potential launch in 2027.
For console players purchasing digital copies, preload is scheduled to begin on November 12, one week before launch. Preloading allows players to download the game files in advance, although availability and timing may vary by platform and purchase.
Players should check their preferred digital storefront for the latest pricing, edition details, and download instructions.
What to Expect on November 19
With the release date approaching, the biggest questions concern how the finished game will bring Leonida to life. Players will be exploring a modern Vice City, following Jason and Lucia's story, and discovering how the different parts of the open world connect.
Rockstar's trailers have established the setting, introduced key characters, and outlined the central conflict. However, many aspects of the gameplay experience will only become clear once players can get their hands on the final release.
The PC release timeline also remains uncertain, leaving console players as the confirmed audience for launch day.
For now, November 19 is the date to watch. After years of announcements, delays, and speculation, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in just one month.
Correction (October 19, 2026): An earlier version of this article said the first trailer was released on December 5, 2023, and that the second trailer came out alongside the May 2025 delay announcement. Rockstar released the first trailer on December 4, 2023, a day early after it leaked, and the second trailer arrived on May 6, 2025, four days after the delay was announced.
Context
Most of the GTA 6 timeline is now settled history: the December 2023 reveal, two delays, pre-orders on June 25 and the launch trailer on October 15. What is left is a short calendar. Preloads unlock on November 12, a week before the November 19 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that applies to boxed copies too, since they ship with a download code.
Two more dates frame the launch. The Game Awards takes place on December 10 in Los Angeles, and its published rules set the eligibility cutoff at November 20, one day after GTA 6 arrives. The first independent verdicts should come before either date, if reports about the review embargo are right.
What we know
- Rockstar's pre-order announcement lists the Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.
- Purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders add one free month of GTA+.
- Rockstar says the boxed version contains a download code that supports preloading from November 12, the same day as digital copies.
- The Game Awards requires games to be on sale by November 20 at 9 p.m. PT, which makes GTA 6 eligible for Game of the Year.
- No PC version has been announced; Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in May that Rockstar always starts on console.
What we don't know yet
- Insider Gaming reports that reviews will go live before November 19, but no embargo date has been announced and the outlet says it may change.
- Leaker NateTheHate claims review codes will reach media before the end of October; Rockstar has not said when critics get the game.
- GamesBeat, citing four sources, reports a PC release in the first quarter of 2027; Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed it.
- The Game Awards has not said when it will announce this year's nominees.
VICEVERSA's take
The preload date deserves more attention than it gets. Because the boxed version is a download code, nearly everyone will pull the game from a server, and a one-week window is how Rockstar spreads that load before launch night. If your connection is slow or your SSD is close to full, November 12 is your real deadline, not the 19th.
Reviews are the other thing to watch. If the Insider Gaming report holds, critics will publish days before release, and the depth of those reviews will depend on how long they had with a game this size; codes in late October would mean about three weeks. That timing feeds straight into The Game Awards, where GTA 6 qualifies with one day to spare. On PC, the GamesBeat report is specific and well sourced, but until Rockstar says something, buying on console is the only plan that rests on an official date.
