GTA 6 Wildlife Blowout: Over 170 Species, Legendary Animals, and Next-Gen Fur Physics Revealed

According to the new details, players will share the open world with over 170 different species of animals, breathing life into the skies, swamps, forests, and oceans of Vice City and its surrounding counties.
Here is the breakdown of the wildlife populations confirmed so far:
-
60+ types of birds
-
30+ land mammals
-
A diverse array of fish and reptiles
A Next-Generation Ocean Ecosystem
The waters of Leonida won't just be for high-speed jet ski races. Michael Kane, Animation Director for GTA 6 at Rockstar Games, confirmed that the game’s marine life has received a massive overhaul.
Players will encounter various species of sharks, whales, rays, sea turtles, and jellyfish. Kane emphasized that each of these marine animals is built with entirely distinct movement behaviors, ensuring the ocean feels as dynamic and unpredictable as the city streets.
Groundbreaking Visuals and Fur Physics
Rockstar is pushing their proprietary engine to its absolute limits for the game's fauna. The article confirms that animals will feature advanced lighting interactions, including iridescence, bioluminescence, and translucency—perfect for the neon-lit waters or the murky depths of the swamps.
Furthermore, GTA 6 introduces an entirely new hair and fur simulation system. Animal pelts are now fully simulated and will dynamically react to the environment. Expect to see fur react realistically to water, get caked in mud and dirt, and even experience matting and clumping over time.
The Return of the Compendium & Legendary Animals
For fans who spent hundreds of hours tracking and studying wildlife in Red Dead Redemption 2, there is incredible news. The GTA 6 animal roster size sits right alongside RDR2's base count of 178 species.
Hunting and cataloging are making a triumphant return. Players will be able to analyze and scan animals in the wild to register them into an official in-game Compendium. Furthermore, the report confirms that wildlife will be divided into different rarity tiers:
-
Discoverable
-
Rare
-
Legendary
Whether you are tracking a Legendary Panther through the Leonida brush, visiting the newly confirmed in-game Zoos, or just trying to avoid gators in the swamplands, it's clear that the wildlife in GTA 6 is going to be a game within the game.

Context
The wildlife figures also come from Game Informer's September 29 cover story. Michael Kane, Rockstar's vice president of dynamic art, said Florida's diverse ecosystem was something the team wanted to “faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida”. The count is over 170 species, with more than 60 birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and sea life.
Comparisons with Red Dead Redemption 2, praised for its wildlife, were immediate, and GTA VI borrows its rarity language. Manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators, which outlets note are new to Rockstar games, are among the named species, alongside invasive ones such as green iguanas and rhesus macaques.
What we know
- Rockstar says Leonida has more than 170 animal species, including over 60 birds and over 30 land mammals.
- Sea life includes several shark species, whales, rays, sea turtles and jellyfish.
- Fur is fully simulated: it changes when wet and clumps when dirty, with color and coat variation within a species.
- Materials vary by species, including iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency.
- Some animals are grouped as Discoverable, Rare and Legendary; Rockstar has not said which.
What we don't know yet
- A Red Dead-style compendium where players register animals has not been officially detailed.
- Hunting as a system, with pelts or income, has not been confirmed.
- The animals in the Legendary tier are still secret.
- What the zoo holds and how players interact with it has not been explained.
VICEVERSA's take
The headline number matters less than the decision to sort animals into tiers. Rarity only means something if there is a reason to go looking, which points to a tracking or collection loop in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption 2, even if Rockstar has not named a compendium. For GTA, that would be a new kind of side activity: quiet, patient, and set in the swamps and keys rather than the city.
The comparisons need some care. Outlets disagree on Red Dead Redemption 2's exact species count, and “170-plus” across birds, fish and reptiles says little about how many animals actually behave differently. The fur simulation and Kane's emphasis on accurately researched animals are the stronger signals, because that work is expensive and only pays off if players look closely. What remains to be seen is whether wildlife changes how people move through Leonida or mostly decorates it. The answer arrives with the game on November 19.
